SEBASTIAN MARBACHER — Interview
Sebastian Marbacher is a product designer based in Zurich.
Hello Sebastian how are you?
Thanks I am good, enjoying the season.
Can you introduce yourself?
My name is Sebastian Marbacher. Most likely you’ll find me in the kitchen, in my atelier or somewhere outdoors. Six years ago I moved to Zurich to study design. Since then I live and work here in my studio as a product designer. Most of my projects are in the field of furniture and interior design.
Where does your interest in design come from?
I am fascinated by the variety of materials, colors and forms. And I am interested in how they speak to us.
Can you explain to us one of your projects?
My latest one is the Basic Chair. The project started a few years ago under the working title “chaise minimal”. I had a very simple sketch in my mind and was driven by the question how narrow and simple a chair could be? After a couple of prototypes my question became more precise and the feature “stackable” more important. The outcome is not the most minimal chair but a very basic one. And you can build a tower with it. So high till you can touch the sky.
What do you think about the current design scene in Zurich?
It’s really nice to see how the young generation becomes more and more established and we get recognized. It should be like that, right?
A designer that you admire?
The work of Martino Gamper catches my eyes again and again. I guess it is because we share a lot of interest. And I like his attitude to design and the design world.
What are you reading these days?
I am reading with big pleasure the correspondence of Alice Vollenweider and Hugo Lötscher in “Kulinaritäten”. I have almost finished it so recommendations are very welcome!
The last word…
It would be nice to meet you someday…
