Daniel Gafner, Zürich-based product designer and carpenter.

— Hello Daniel, how are you?

Hello Ligature, I am fine, thanks and nice to meet you!

— Can you introduce yourself?

I am a father of two little sons, a product designer, a carpenter and I am living and working in Zürich.

— Where does your interest in design come from?

As a kid I loved to draw cars like Hot Rods, so my dream was to become a car designer.

— Would you like to explain to us one of your projects?

I developed the scenography for „the most beautiful Swiss books“. The starting point was the task to design a versatile showcase for the honored books and all the submitted books too. That means a lot of books! The inspiration was Luis Sorianos Biblioburro. First we would like to make the exhibitions with real Donkeys but as you can imagine, there were several reasons against this idea. Another inspiration was the children’s book „Reise nach Tripiti“ from H.U. Steger. Out of this I designed a wheelbarrow which become something between furniture, tool and display.

— Do you have a favorite material to work with?

I work a lot with wood and I like it!

— Is there any designer you appreciate a lot?

There are so many good designers out there! I prefer to mention some artists like Peter Radelfinger, René Zäch, Thomas Galler.

— Is there a book which opened your eyes about design?

Not especially but there are some books I regularly look at, for example Roy Lichtenstein from Lawrence Alloway 1984.

— The last word…

…when will it be written?
