Form Us With Love, Stockholm-based design studio.

Hello Form Us With Love, how are you?

We are very well! However the winter just came back to Stockholm, which is not very appreciated. But we are preparing ourselves for some warmer weather and some exhibition of our product BAUX Acoustical Panels at this year Milan Fair that is soon coming up!

Can you introduce yourselves?

Form Us With Love is a Stockholm based design studio. For almost ten years, the internationally acclaimed studio has put dialogue and relevance at its core, using strategic design to position, build and sustain brands of tomorrow. The studio works closely integrated with the industry, on site, through audits, workshops and quality control – always striving to balance opposing values to challenge the conventional. Collaborations include: Ikea, Muuto, Absolut, La Cividina, Menu, Cappellini, DePadova, FontanaArte, Bolon, Ateljé Lyktan, Design House Stockholm and Hem. Awards include: iF Awards, Good Design award, Wallpaper Magazine Award, Stora Design Priset, Fast Co ‘50 most influential designers shaping the future’, Elle Decoration’s annual award ‘Designers of the year’.

How did the studio start up?

Jonas Pettersson, John Löfgren and Petrus Paler started the studio in 2005. They had the same view on design when they started collaborating in college, then they just continued after, in a professional package.

What are the key features of your design?

Its idea based, rational and holistic.

Can you tell us more about the Janinge chairs that you designed for IKEA?

Using neat yet durable frames, a new collection of chairs and stools are presented with a remarkable price. The great idea behind the JANINGE collection is the democratization of design, to create a durable construction based on the needs of both domestic and public environments.

The theoretical challenge behind the project was the desire to balance the idea of individual aesthetics with public quality. The design needs to be individual enough to fit in someone’s home, yet suitable for multiplication in corporate and institutional settings. IKEA asked us to design something specific enough for a home that could withstand the international tests for public seating. To pass, we had to design for strength, durability, impact, drops, tilts and unit stability. Despite the above challenges, JANINGE chairs and stools had to be the most affordable objects we had ever made.

In working with IKEA, the most interesting challenge is meeting personal style in a world where the boarders between public and private markets are gone. Our collaborative objective was to find the perfect multi-purpose chair, easy to fall in love with and quick to maintain. Whether our designs are placed in domestic or commercial settings, the aim is always to create bonds, where our designs contribute to human values of comfort and generosity.

Do you have a favourite material to work with?

It is often more the match that is intriguing. For example when the combination of material goes well with a certain shape or a specific function.

What would you recommend to a young designer?

To gain work experience is crucial. Take all chances you can get to learn from people in the business. Through internships, workshops or seminars.

A designer that you admire?

The Nendo design team is doing a great job. They manage to keep the same intuitive and poetic vibe in every project. They do projects that are very easy to grasp but always with some unique and intriguing twist.

Any books right now at the studio?

The hottest book at the studio right now is one not yet existing. We are shaping an idea of making one ourselves.

The last word…

See you in Milan!
