Daniel Peter, graphic designer, Lucerne.

Hello Daniel, how are you?

Thanks, I’m fine! I’ve just came back from a journey to Paris and Strasbourg, which was exciting. And the travel continues in a few days, I’ll go up to the mountains for snow hiking. So, good prospects!

Can you introduce yourself?

I’m a graphic designer based in Lucerne. I work in the fields of typography, narrative design and poster design. I also like and play music, hiking and well done furniture. After working part time for the “Schauspielhaus Zürich” I work now for “Velvet Creative Office” in Lucerne and I’m doing some interesting side projects.

Where does your interest in graphic design come from?

My first contact with design was in the field of music. I was charmed of nice album covers and concert posters. This formed my interest for printed matter, visual concepts, photography and typography.

Can you tell us more about Detektiv Bureau?

The “Detective Bureau” was a Lucerne based studio with Mathis Pfäffli, Nadine Gerber, Christoph Barmettler and me. Founded 2009, “Detective Bureau” was for three years an alliance of graphic designers, illustrators and politically highly committed people, but also a space for young arts, discussions, designs and coffees. We organized exhibitions in the fields of arts, illustrations, videos, and did readings and workshops.

Your “Aktuelle Kunst U33” poster has been selected as one of the 100 Beste Plakate 2013. What was the idea behind this project, and what does being selected mean to you?

The poster is for a group exhibition for young artists at four locations. My goal was to present the locations on the poster mixed with intuitive and fresh elements but still in a classic approach. This year I had two posters in the selection of „100 Beste Plakate“, which was a pleasure for me, of course. The competition is a good cross-section for current issues and posters design.

For the “Schauspielhaus Zürich” you are following the identity made by Cornel Windlin. Can you tell us more about it?

Since 2010 Velvet Creative Office works together with the Schauspielhaus Zürich. From 2010 to 2012 I did the graphic implementation directly at the theatre. The visual concept was done by Cornel Windlin and his friends in 2009. For a continuing visual recognisability we worked with the existing strong visual concept but with a new way of storytelling and photography.

Is there any designer or artist you appreciate a lot?

There are many and not only in graphic design. In the field of music – to name one – I really like Chilly Gonzales with his unbreakable fire and experimental approach.

Which books are on your bedside table?

Just one for the moment, but much reading needs to be done. “An Vogelhäusern mangelt es jedoch nicht” by Luca Schenardi.

The last word …

Ahoi.
